Do you know… photo.net ?

7 07 2009

If you are be in photography area for some time I’m sure that you’ll meet photo.net one day, if you haven’t yet. Perhaps the words from this interesting portal will speak for themselves:

“photo.net is a site for serious photographers to connect with other photographers, explore photo galleries, discuss photography, share and critique photos, and learn about photography. The site began in 1993 as Philip Greenspun’s personal home page at MIT and has grown to become a community of photographers that includes more than 675,000 registered users working to help each other improve.”

Also the stats are very impressive:

  • 5.5 million visits per month
  • 60 million page views per month
  • 80 000 discussion forum posts per month

So what all you can find on the address photo.net? Many forum threads about various aspects of photography, photography equipment reviews, members’ galleries and portfolios, articles with photography techniques and valuable advices.

I am a member of photo.net for more than a year and I have posted more than 50 photos there. And here is my experience:

  • Pros:
  1. You can find really valuable information in forums and there was nothing so far that I was interested in and which wouldn’t be discussed in some topic there.
  2. There’s many professional photographers posting their masterpieces so there’s a lot of inspiring work to see.
  3. You can upload as many photos as you want for free with one small restriction – you must post them for a critique.
  • Cons:
    1. There’s SO many new photos posted every day that your post may fall into oblivion almost immediately.
    2. The posting mechanism is not very good and if your photo is really not a very good one it will be forgotten yet the same day when you posted it.
    3. In so huge amount of new photos those few people still encouraged to write some comment to your work will usually write them only if they are very pleased. This means that you will receive a real critique very rarely and that’s pity.
    4. Between so many people there will be always someone who wants nothing else but spoil work of others by giving inadequate low grades, usually 3 on 7 grade scale.

If I reckon pros and cons, cons are winning here and that’s probably the reason why I don’t use photo.net more often. I still post there my new works but I don’t expect any big interest from others and I don’t expect any usefull critique at all. BUT I don’t want to discourage you from visiting this portal or from posting there. No, still it is probably the best photo portal I ever visited and used and I’m happy that it exists. If you have some problem with your equipment or you’re looking for an advice about some photography equipment or technique, if you’re looking for some real masterpieces for your inspiration, then photo.net is the right place. But if you want to get serious, usefull critique to your photos which will help you to be better… then try something else, e.g. NatureScapes.

That’s all for today. Enjoy the summer!
